On Friday, 14 March at 10 a.m., the new reception pavilion in the Küchwald at Küchwaldring 18 will be ceremoniously handed over to the people of Chemnitz for use by Thomas Kütter, Head of the Office for Building Management and Construction of the City of Chemnitz, together with the Mitte-West Citizens' Platform.
The open space was selected for the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 as an intervention area - as a so-called public square - by the Mitte-West citizens' platform to equip the Küchwald with a pavilion as a contact and information point.
With the participation of the Küchwald interest group (Küchwaldbühne e.V., Parkeisenbahn, Schullandheim, Botanischer Garten, Erlebnispädagogisches Zentrum, Kindertagesstätte Glückskäfer), the concept of a multifunctional reception pavilion - including a public, barrier-free toilet accessible from 6 am to 10 pm - was created on the corner of Küchwaldstraße/Küchwaldring right next to the railway barrier.
The pavilion also contains a digital information board, weather-protected seating, a nappy-changing table, lockers with integrated charging facilities for e-bike batteries, a drinking fountain and bicycle parking spaces for users.
The idea for the pavilion began in 2019/2020, when the Chemnitz residents surveyed selected Küchwaldpark from eight possible public spaces in the city centre-west area and named it as one of the 30 intervention areas.
A budget of 325,000 euros was available for the design. The work was carried out by eleven trades. The planning services were provided by Architekturkanal, Dipl.-Ing. Architekt Falko Hensel.
Background:
The public squares are the result of intensive participation by the people in the neighbourhoods and localities. The stakeholders from the city's neighbourhoods have put a lot of thought into the project and, together with their citizens, have selected a public space to be redesigned as part of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025. Each of the eight areas of the citizens' platforms and each of the eight incorporated localities received a maximum of 325,000 euros. For example, a rest area on the Chemnitz Valley cycle path, a themed circular hiking trail around the village of Kleinolbersdorf-Altenhain and a lift at Wittgensdorf primary school have been implemented, creating a barrier-free event space in the assembly hall.
The public squares are one of the 30 intervention areas of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025. They are the city of Chemnitz's urban development project for the Capital of Culture, which now involves an investment of over 60 million euros.
