Empfang für Aljona Savchenko und Robin Szolkowy

It was to be the highlight of their unrivalled career - after their demanding Olympic free skate in a high-class competition, the Chemnitz figure skating pair Aljona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy won bronze in the end.

A reception for Aljona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy will take place next Saturday, 15 February at 11 a.m. in the Galerie Roter Turm (basement), where hopefully many ice skating fans, in the presence of Mayor Barbara Ludwig, will give the Olympians a fantastic welcome and celebrate the medal together with them. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity to get the Olympians' autographs.

"Even if the two of them may not be able to celebrate their bronze medal at the moment: Congratulations. Aljona and Robin have given everything, they have risked everything. Their skating careers are outstanding, they were and are role models in figure skating, a figurehead for the whole of Germany. On behalf of the people of Chemnitz, I can only say: We are simply proud of you. And that's why we want to give them and their coach a warm welcome to the city on Saturday," says Mayor Barbara Ludwig.

After this season, Aljona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy, one of the most successful ice skating couples in the world, will end their active competitive careers. In eleven years together with coach Ingo Steuer, the pair won eight gold, five silver and one bronze medal at the World and European Championships. At the last Winter Olympics four years ago in Vancouver, the pair from Chemnitz also won bronze.

The ice skating pair will be awarded the City of Chemnitz Prize of Honour in the spring.
