The City of Chemnitz and Chemnitz 2025 will be celebrating the completion of the intervention areas for the European Capital of Culture 2025 for a whole weekend on 23 and 24 August. Local stakeholders will be offering guided tours, going on hikes, playing a concert and inviting children to an activity day.
The park under the railway viaduct on Annaberger Straße and the extension to the "Club E" youth club in Einsiedel will be the last two intervention areas to be inaugurated this weekend. On Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., an entertainment programme for young and old at the viaduct invites visitors to discover the intervention area. There will be an open day at "Club E" from 2 pm.
Building Mayor Michael Stötzer: "It's great to see that the intervention areas are now actually finished - and are just waiting to be discovered by the people of Chemnitz and their guests. Because they have one thing in common: they were designed with the active participation of and for their future users. It is a matter close to my heart to thank all those who have contributed as planners, construction companies or partners and who have accompanied and supported us over the past few years."
The intervention area programme comprised a total of 30 projects of various sizes. The first to be inaugurated was the new "Manifold" market fountain in April 2022. This was followed over the next three years by major projects such as the four places of new beginnings (Hartmannfabrik, Stadtwirtschaft, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff-Haus and Garage Campus) or comparatively smaller projects in the city and neighbourhoods such as the Morgenleite park and the "Lohse-Uhlig-Steig" hiking trail in Kleinolbersdorf-Altenhain. With the "Stadt am Fluss" (City by the River) sub-programme, the people of Chemnitz rediscovered their waterways, for example with the district park on the Pleißenbach and along the Chemnitz. Here in particular, the programme acted as a catalyst for more, as the district park on the Pleißenbach will be continuously expanded and further developed over the next few years with the support of the funding bodies and the City of Chemnitz, also as a legacy of the European Capital of Culture 2025.
As of 10 June 2025, the intervention area programme has a total volume of 57.8 million euros. This includes €10.0 million from the budget of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 and an additional €26.0 million in funding from federal and state funding programmes as well as €21.8 million from the City of Chemnitz' own funds. This makes it the largest urban development programme in recent years, covering almost the entire city area.
Originally, the Schauspielhaus was also part of the intervention area programme. However, as the need for refurbishment is greater than initially thought, alternative locations were examined where the theatre, puppet theatre and studio stage could be used permanently and, if necessary, relocated. The discussion on the strategy paper is still ongoing and a decision in principle is to be presented to the city council after the summer break.
