School route maps completely revised

These recommend safe routes to every single local primary school. Traffic lights, crossing aids, 30 km/h zones and danger spots are labelled. The expertise of experts - who decide, among other things, where traffic lights and crossings should be installed on school routes - has been incorporated into the revised plans. These are now to be updated annually. Parents can view the school route plan that applies to them and their school district at any local primary school.

School network

The city expects pupil numbers to rise over the next ten years,

This will result in a greater need for space at secondary schools. In May, the partial school network plans for primary and secondary schools were discussed by the city council. The resolution passed there now allows for long-term action, as well as statements on the capacity of individual primary and secondary school locations up to the 2024/2025 school year. The administration wants to compensate for the higher space requirements for secondary schools with targeted measures. Options for increasing capacity in this area are currently being examined. The study will be incorporated into a city council resolution before the end of this year.

School transport: new statutes

In August 2015, the City of Chemnitz's new statutes on school transport came into force: schoolchildren who have their main place of residence in Saxony and attend a school in Chemnitz are eligible. An application is now valid for several years, with the exception of vocational schools and special transport services. An annual application is required for this. Eligible persons are reimbursed for travel by public transport or private vehicles for a maximum of ten months per school year at a monthly rate of 50 per cent of the cheapest fare. New according to the statutes: Proof is no longer required. The application forms for reimbursement are available from schools, the education and sports office and at www.chemnitz.de.

For 2016, the city expects costs of around 1,136,957 euros for the transport of 6,300 pupils.

Costs for teaching and learning materials

Chemnitz currently has 78 schools in three school types. The city's 2014 budget provided a good 1.2 million euros for the textbooks, exercise books, photocopies and graphing calculators required there. However, the sum that the city is spending this year totals 1.4 million euros. The costs for teaching and learning materials for the 39 municipal primary schools amount to 356,309 euros, for the 12 secondary schools: 218,505 euros; for seven grammar schools: 355,791 euros; for the Chemnitz school model: 24.115 euros; for ten special schools: 93,316 euros; seven vocational schools: 344,560 euros and for evening secondary schools/evening grammar schools: 23,163 euros.

Computers & Co.

The city is constantly replacing outdated computers for teaching. This year, old equipment at 14 educational institutions was replaced with 650 new computers at a cost of 600,900 euros.

Furniture & facilities

The renewal of facilities is often associated with school refurbishment. This was the case this summer at the Ludwig Richter primary school, which also received new furniture for the dining room and equipment for the workroom for over 32,000 euros as part of the refurbishment. For the extension to the Schönau primary and secondary school, the city purchased equipment for two workrooms as well as furniture for six classrooms and eight blackboards. The responsible department estimates the costs for this at just under 69,000 euros. Six schools received new steel lockers in accordance with fire safety guidelines, including the Tereschkowa primary school for more than 20,000 euros and the Altendorf secondary school for just under 28,000 euros.

Register ABC pupils for 2016/17

There is a change in the enrolment process for children starting school in 2016/17. Enrolment letters will no longer be sent out. According to the Education Act for the Free State of Saxony, compulsory schooling begins in the 2016/2017 school year for all children born between 1 July 2009 and 30 June 2010. Children who reach the age of six by 30 September 2016 and are registered by their legal guardians at the desired municipal primary school in the relevant school district are also required to attend school for this school year. This is possible on 1 and 2 September 2015 from 2 pm to 6 pm.

Swimming lessons

Due to the renovation of the Gablenz indoor swimming pool in summer 2016, for which the tendering process is currently underway, school swimming lessons will be relocated to other pools. The city will provide details in good time before the start of the construction phase, which will last approximately one year.

How is the school building programme progressing?

At present, 18 of the 21 measures in the current school building programme have been completed. The Heinrich Heine primary school will be completed at the start of the school year. The facade and windows of the school building have been renovated, a lift for the disabled has been installed and the sports hall has been completely refurbished. Both buildings have been overhauled in accordance with the requirements of the Energy Saving Ordinance. The windows, for example, are fitted with triple glazing. The city invested 2.58 million euros, of which just under 1 million euros was subsidised. In addition to the Terra Nova Campus (Heinrich-Schütz-Straße), the construction of the new two-court sports hall at the Dr.-Wilhelm-Andre-Gymnasium will be completed this year.

The following school refurbishments will begin in the coming months:

Boarding school at the sports high school: The empty neighbouring building will be completely renovated.

The city estimates the amount of the investment at €7.12 million, of which €2.85 million is subsidised. Start of construction: March 2016

Borna primary school: The building complex of the school for the physically disabled on Wittgensdorfer Straße will be remodelled for the Borna primary school following its relocation to the new building on Heinrich-Schütz-Straße. Firstly, the buildings constructed in the 1980s are to be demolished. The old building and the gymnasium will be renovated. Costs: 8.50 million euros, of which 3.40 million euros are subsidised. Start of construction: January 2016

Josephinenschule - secondary school: The city is renovating the empty school building at Agnesstraße 11 for 4.35 million euros to increase the capacity of the Josephinenschule. A wing will connect the two buildings. Start of construction: October 2015

Abendoberschule/Abendgymnasium: In addition to draining, the roof and façade as well as the sanitary facilities will be renovated for 2.5 million euros, of which 985,640 euros is subsidised.

Start of construction: October 2015

"Ernst Busch" speech therapy school: This school building is also to be drained and the roof, façade and sanitary facilities refurbished. Costs: 2.5 million euros, including 998,357 euros in funding. Start of construction: July 2016

Vocational School Centre for Technology III Richard-Hartmann-Schule: The renovation of the roof, façade, sanitary facilities and building services of the prefabricated building is planned for

4 million euros are planned. The budget includes 1.59 million euros in funding. Start of construction: October 2015

Emanuel-Gottlieb-Flemming primary school: The school, apart from the after-school care centre, will be renovated for

4.07 million euros, including 1.62 million euros in funding. Start of construction: February 2016

Rosa-Luxemburg-Grundschule: The school building is being completely refurbished at a cost of 2.17 million euros, including 870,000 euros in funding. Start of construction: September 2015.
