Rabenstein reservoir: sanitary facilities are being completely refurbished and modernised

Drinking water pipeline laid to supply the reservoir site

Renovation work is due to begin in November at the site where bathers are currently enjoying the cool waters of the Rabenstein reservoir in warm temperatures: The changing rooms and sanitary facilities will be modernised and made fit for major events such as the Kosmonaut Festival, Heavy24 or the Fiesta parties and the Dragon Festival. The city council's administration and finance committee will decide on this on 25 August.

These have been in operation since the reservoir opened 40 years ago. The toilet facilities, showers and floor and wall tiles were last modernised in 1990. The extensive refurbishment measures are to take place in the colder months so that they are ready for the planned start of the season. The following measures are planned:

  • The men's area is to be given four times the capacity of WCs and the women's area three times the capacity.
  • The facility is to be made barrier-free.
  • Shower capacity will be doubled, with hot water showers in some areas.
  • A separate locker area will be installed.

The costs of these measures amount to around 600,000 euros, of which the city will bear around 420,000 euros. The EFC is providing its own funds totalling around 155,000 euros, plus subsidies for the barrier-free conversion of the toilets.

A number of measures have already been implemented in recent months:

An access road (93 metres long) to the site was widened from 3.50 metres to 7.50 metres and made suitable for vehicles weighing up to 40 tonnes. This was built to shorten set-up and dismantling times for major events, to prevent damage to the sunbathing lawns and to create parking areas for events. This greatly improved the internal infrastructure. The costs of the extension totalled 20,000 euros.

In the first construction phase, a water pipe was installed to supply the mobile sanitary containers on the Heavy24 and Kosmonautfestival camping areas. This connection had not previously existed, with water being supplied via hoses and water containers. The planned second construction phase, costing 120,000 euros, is a prerequisite for the renovation of the sanitary facilities at the reservoir, as an increased volume of water is required.
