Rabenstein primary school reopens after refurbishment
At six million euros, the largest school building renovation in recent years - grand opening on Monday, 8 August at 9 a.m.
With the first day of school after the summer holidays next Monday, children will once again be taught at Rabenstein primary school for the first time since the general renovation. The listed building will bear the name of the famous scientist Hans Carl von Carlowitz, who first coined the term sustainability.
"For me, every investment in education is linked to sustainable action. That's why the school is rightly named after him," says Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig. On Saturday, the first school opening ceremony in 20 years will take place in this building. "I am delighted that the largest school building refurbishment in Chemnitz in recent years and probably in the years to come has been successfully completed," says Barbara Ludwig. From next Monday, over 170 children will be taught in the building.
Rabenstein primary school - a place with a lot of history: the building was constructed in 1907 as a central school. In its heyday, there was room for almost 1,000 pupils to learn in the building. Before the refurbishment began in 2014, the building had stood empty for more than ten years, as the school in Rabenstein was closed at the end of the 2001/2002 school year. The main task was to adapt the former building to today's utilisation requirements for a two-form entry primary school. The building and the technical facilities no longer met today's standards. This is why the work was so complex.
The school is now barrier-free. A second escape route was added through a staircase inserted into the historic building structure. Covered break areas and a new sports equipment room were built. The outdoor facilities were completely redesigned. A football pitch with ball catch fence, a playground with climbing frame and sand play area, a toboggan hill for the winter and a new area for the school garden were created. A terrace in the basement was also created as a transition between the building and the open spaces. This can also be used as a green classroom.
34 companies, 30 of them from Saxony, were involved in the refurbishment. It cost a total of six million euros, including 1.7 million euros in subsidies from the state of Saxony and 4.3 million euros from the town's own funds.
The inauguration ceremony of the Rabenstein primary school for invited guests will take place next Monday, 8 August 2016, from 9 am. Representatives of the media are cordially invited to attend.
Anyone interested can make a note of 13 August from 10 am to 2 pm. That Saturday is an open day in the school building.
