The series of information and dialogue events on the ‘Rabenstein Innovation Campus’ got off to a start yesterday, Thursday 2 July, with a well-attended launch event. At Rabenstein Primary School, the City of Chemnitz provided interested residents with an update on the current status of the site’s redevelopment. The event was fully booked, which highlights the high demand for information and the local community’s keen interest in the site’s future development.
Mayor Thomas Kütter, Börries Butenop, Head of the City Planning and Property Office, Carina Kühnel, Head of the Environment Office, and Sebastian Michaelis from the City of Chemnitz’s Economic Affairs Department outlined the current state of planning and answered participants’ questions.
The focus of the approximately two-hour event was on the urban development plan for the Innovation Campus. The City of Chemnitz provided detailed information on the ongoing development plan procedure and outlined the formal procedural steps still to come. In doing so, they clearly demonstrated how initial project ideas are transformed into concrete planning law and how the high-quality and environmental requirements for the area’s development will be systematically addressed as the process continues. Representatives from the City of Chemnitz emphasised their aim of using the project to sustainably strengthen the city as a business location, develop strategically important sites and create attractive conditions for innovative companies.
Building on this, the dialogue with members of the public was a key part of the event. Participants took the opportunity to ask questions, offer suggestions and contribute their perspectives to the discussion.
In particular, there was intensive discussion of the expected traffic impacts and issues relating to noise emissions arising from the planned commercial use. The nature of the commercial enterprises to be established in the future was also a key topic. Alongside these concerns, those present also highlighted the opportunities that such a business park could offer for the development of the neighbourhood and the region.
The City of Chemnitz will continue to actively engage with the neighbourhood: a follow-up to the series of events is planned for early autumn 2026, at which the key issues raised by residents will be discussed in detail.
