Quality seal for 34 municipal daycare centres

The seal of quality was initiated and awarded for the first time last year by the Office for Youth and Family Affairs, initially to 14 municipal day care centres. With this year's awards, a total of 48 municipal daycare centres in Chemnitz now bear the seal of quality. The plan is for all of the 70 municipal daycare centres to have completed the quality check by 2013.
Background information: According to the Office for Youth and Family, the award is intended to recognise special commitment and dedication, particularly on the part of the educational staff in the daycare centres. The basis for this is the quality management system introduced in the centres in recent years on the initiative of the specialist department. The process began back in 1997 with participation in the federal project on the "Educational mission of day-care centres". External quality assessment procedures such as KRIPS-R and HUGS are used for assessment and evaluation, and specialist consultants have been trained to apply them. In order to make quality development transparent and make it sustainable, an annual target agreement and assessment consultation is concluded between the daycare centre team and the provider. All municipal daycare centres also use the "Educational and learning stories" observation procedure to implement the educational mandate. All centres use their own development sheet for the annual development discussions with parents.
According to the specialist department, all measures have created a good basis for ensuring that the goal of providing every child in a daycare centre with the best possible education and upbringing is fulfilled at all times in the day-to-day running of the daycare centre and that the high expectations and requirements with regard to the provision of early childhood education and upbringing are met. In addition, the daycare centres of the city of Chemnitz also see themselves as a place of learning for all those involved: this includes the various opportunities for parent counselling and family education as well as the continuous training of the educational staff themselves.
