School is back in session at Adelsberg primary school. Over a construction period of more than two years, the existing building was renovated and a three-storey extension was built. As a result, Adelsberg primary school has been expanded to meet the needs of a two-form entry primary school with eight classes.
The result is eight classrooms and four specialised classrooms for art, handicrafts, music and IT, as well as two group rooms and two after-school care rooms, plus office and meeting rooms for the after-school care centre and various social areas. The extension, which was built barrier-free, houses the catering kitchen, which was prepared for the modern "Cook & Freeze" concept for efficient and healthy catering for pupils.
A total of around 7 million euros was invested in the refurbishment and extension. In addition, around 500,000 euros were invested in equipping the classrooms, specialist rooms and administrative areas. Since the start of construction in June 2022, a total of 40 companies have been involved in the refurbishment measures.
Among other things, five boreholes were drilled, each 140 metres deep, to install a brine-to-water geothermal heat pump. This pump covers the entire heat requirement of the new building, which is heated by underfloor heating. In summer, the heat pump can also be used as a passive cooling system to keep the rooms at the right temperature.
A photovoltaic system with an output of approx. 22 kWp will be installed on the roof of the new building. This system generates around 20,000 kWh of its own electricity and covers the electricity requirements for the heat pump, ventilation and lighting in the new building. Surplus electricity is fed into the old building. The entire energy concept of the extension is designed as a "zero thermal energy building", thus supporting the implementation of the resolution on greenhouse-neutral administration and the phasing out of fossil fuels.
The new building was insulated in autumn 2024 so that school operations could resume on 7 January 2025. Work on the curtain wall and plastering will continue from April 2025 and should be completed in summer 2025.
The lower schoolyard area was completely redesigned, including seating areas on the slope and a new green classroom. It will be equipped with covered seating areas in the spring at the same time as the façade is completed.
Work on the outdoor facilities is also due to be completed in summer 2025. The plan is to upgrade the area with play equipment and prepare open spaces. The school garden will be restored to its original location so that planting can begin for the new 2025/26 school year.
A disabled car park will be created on the north façade of the old building. In addition, new bicycle racks will be installed in consultation with the school management. The original railing on the street side had to be removed during the construction work. The new railing will be extended to additionally secure the exit of the new building.
