Public transport acceleration: Light rail lines 5/6 (522) now travelling faster

Traffic lights on Bahnhof-/Annaberger Straße renewed - increased traffic safety thanks to separate green phases for left-turners

As part of an ongoing EU funding programme to expand the city's traffic management system, the focus is currently on measures to speed up local public transport. The replacement of three traffic lights in an initial section of Annaberger Straße from Bahnhofstraße to Annenstraße is intended to speed up tram lines 5/6 and 522.

While the renewal of the subordinate systems Annaberger/Annenstraße and Annaberger/Moritzstraße was already completed at the beginning of the month, the traffic lights at the important junction of Bahnhofstraße/Annaberger Straße are due to go into operation tomorrow, Friday.

In addition to speeding up public transport, traffic safety at the junction is also to be improved. To this end, left-turners from Bahnhofstrasse into Annaberger Strasse will be given their own green phase for traffic safety reasons.

In this context, the Civil Engineering Office would like to draw particular attention to the following changes to the traffic routing in the junction area and asks all road users to pay increased attention accordingly:

  • Changes to the lane layout in Bahnhofstraße in the direction of Falkeplatz: now 2 straight ahead lanes and 2 left turn lanes instead of the previous 3 straight ahead lanes and 1 left turn lane.
  • Important: In future, drivers turning right into Bahnhofstraße must give priority to pedestrians and cyclists crossing Annaberger Straße!

There are also further changes for pedestrians and cyclists. The green light time for crossing Annaberger Straße will be increased. The request buttons at the crossing of Annaberger Straße will be removed and the "yellow flashing" across the tram tracks will be replaced by red/green signalling.

The total cost of the construction project is 115,500 euros for all three systems, around 80,000 euros of which is subsidised. The work was carried out by the Leipzig branch of Swarco.
