Public "predator feeding" at the Museum of Natural History
Holiday programme on 10 and 17 February 2016, starting at 11 a.m. each day
On 10 and 17 February 2016, the Museum für Naturkunde im TIETZ, Moritzstraße 20, invites you to a public feeding session in the Insectatrium. Museum staff will feed praying mantises and tarantulas with all kinds of tasty prey. Brave visitors can even experience tarantulas and ghost insects up close. Admission is free for children and young people up to the age of 18. Adults pay 4.00 euros for a museum ticket at the TIETZ ticket office on the 1st floor.
Like every living creature, insects also need to eat. They are extremely demanding in this respect. While some are content to eat leaves, others want to suck juices or hunt smaller animals. Each animal has specially developed mouthparts for this purpose. Things get particularly interesting when the "predators" are fed. A hungry praying mantis can consume animals that are almost as big as itself. To do this, it grabs the prey with its folding knife-like tentacles. The natural spectacle and the fascinating feeding strategies of insects can be experienced at the Museum für Naturkunde Chemnitz.
