Promotion of cultural institutions and measures

Today, the city council decided to provide financial support for cultural institutions, measures and projects by allocating an extra 150,000 euros.
On the recommendation of the Cultural Advisory Board, this is intended to support projects in the fields of art, music, cultural education, literature, socioculture and the like, which were already submitted to the Cultural Committee for a decision in January, but which showed an additional need beyond the resolution. A total of eight increases in institutional funding and nine project-specific grants or increases in grants were awarded. In addition, a reserve fund totalling EUR 46,660 was set up for spontaneous projects outside of the deadline regulations. The income comes from property tax B, as additional income is recognisable with the annual assessment notice.

In addition, three cultural projects will receive a total of 55,526 euros from an additional amount of state allocations from the Saxon State Ministry of Science and the Arts (SMWK) for investments.

Over-allocation of funds

The volume of applications usually exceeds the sum of 2.88 million euros included in the city's double budget. Applications totalling 1.4 million euros were submitted for 2020 alone - a record figure in recent years. In addition, a large number of independent sponsors have signalled that it is not possible for them to realise cultural offers with the grants proposed so far. A total of 3.03 million euros is now available for independent organisations in 2020.

The following selected cultural institutions and measures will receive additional funding:

  • Museum für sächsische Fahrzeuge Chemnitz e.V.,
  • Fritz Theatre GbR,
  • Klub Solitaer e.V.,
  • Sächischer Kinder- und Jugendfilmdiens e.V. with the festival Schlingel,
  • Ufer e.V.,
  • Arthur e.V.,
  • Netzwerk für Kultur- und Jugendarbeit e.V.,
  • Bandbüro Chemnitz e.V.

Major projects were also selected:

  • "Cheoreografie der Wandlung" by Taupunkt e.V.,
  • the festival of the theatre association FRONT e.V. "Off Europa. Identity Polska",
  • the Begehungen e.V. art and culture festival,
  • the denkART e.V. cultural association's exhibition series "Seeing and experiencing Chemnitz art and culture from yesterday and today - creatively shaping tomorrow",

Additional amount of state allocations from the SMWK

In February 2020, the city received an additional amount of 55,526 euros from the SMWK as part of the state allocation for the promotion of investments in cultural institutions and measures of regional importance. The amount comes from unused funds for structural measures of the state. According to the main statutes of the City of Chemnitz, the allocation is the responsibility of the Culture Committee. Due to the current situation, however, no committee meetings are taking place, so the city council has decided to award the funds.

The following projects will be supported:

  • The Eisenbahnfreunde Richard Hartmann Chemnitz e.V. will receive 24,471 euros for the realisation of the track connection construction section 2.
  • The Sächsische Eisenbahnmuseum e.V. will receive 28,055 euros for an exhibition area on the subject of "Locomotive & Technology" in the historic locomotive control centre.
  • In addition, the Chemnitzer Filmwerkstatt e.V. will receive 3,000 euros for new and additional technology required for the realisation of ongoing short film projects.
