Project week "Reading against violence"
Democracy, Islam and Islamist terror - readings and workshops with schoolchildren
The highly topical text was published in 2013 and the young protagonists Romea and Julian come from very different social backgrounds. But both are disappointed by the reality of life. Their love brings them together and to the dream of a different life, which is shattered by Julian's recklessness. Both find solace and new orientation in Islam. They join a Salafist group without initially realising its extremist nature. Romea breaks out of the tight shackles of this community again. Julian, however, trains to become a "holy warrior". This causes their relationship to fail. They meet again when Julian wants to carry out an attack on a Berlin shopping centre.
The author will use this controversial text as the starting point for a workshop with young school classes on the topics of democracy, Islam and Islamist terror.
The project is financially supported by the Local Action Plan for Democracy, Tolerance and a Cosmopolitan Chemnitz. The "Reading against Violence" project has been running in the city library since 2002. The year-round provision of selected fiction and non-fiction and the author readings for school classes offer pupils and teachers the opportunity to engage with these topics.
Anna Kuschnarowa's young adult novel "Djihad Paradise" was published by Beltz und Gelberg in 2013.
