Project activities to awaken the "sleeping giants"

Local support group for the summer university in Rotterdam

After the second phase of the EU-funded urban development project "2nd Chance: Waking up the sleeping giants" was approved in May 2016, EU coordinator Pia Sachs and Thomas Mehlhorn from the urban planning office are taking part in an intensive training programme in Rotterdam. As representatives of the local Chemnitz support group, they will be trained in the URBACT method at the URBACT Summer University from 24 to 26 August 2016 and enabled to implement the expected project results on site.

On 4 May 2016, activities within the URBACT III network officially began in the project partner cities of Brussels, Caen, Chemnitz, Dubrovnik, Genoa, Gijon, Liverpool, Lublin, Maribor, Naples and Porto. What all of these cities have in common is that they have particularly large vacant buildings or building complexes that are now to be reutilised. In the URBACT network, they want to jointly develop and exchange strategies and concepts.

To this end, regular working meetings will be organised in the partner cities over the two-year duration of the project. The first network meeting on 20 and 21 June 2016 was hosted by the English city of Liverpool. Thomas Mehlhorn attended on behalf of the City of Chemnitz. Representatives of the project partners discussed the objectives, activities and desired results of the project, engaged in discussions and presentations, and visited the building in Liverpool that is being revitalised as part of the project.

Chemnitz was chosen for the second network meeting. Thirty representatives of the European project partners are expected to attend on 13 and 14 October . A study visit will take them to the target property, Spinnereimaschinenbau Altchemnitz, and a tour of schönherr.fabrik is planned as a good practical example.
