Programme for the 22nd Chemnitz Museum Night is online

Advance ticket sales for the 22nd Chemnitz Museum Night start today, Monday 17 April. On 13 May, night owls and anyone interested in art and culture are once again invited to the Museum Night in Chemnitz and the cultural region. This year, 30 museums, galleries, institutions and, for the first time, two cooperation partners are taking part with a varied programme. More than 230 events are planned for this night from 6 pm to 1 am. This year's Museum Night will open at 5.30 pm on the forecourt of the TIETZ with a musical contribution and a dance performance.

Once again, museums and collections from the cultural region will be expanding the programme - this year in Oelsnitz in the Ore Mountains. Dagmar Ruscheinsky, Mayor for Education, Social Affairs, Youth, Culture and Sport of the City of Chemnitz: "The integration of the cultural region represents a special new perspective for all visitors to the Museum Night. 'Change of perspective' is also the motto of this year's Chemnitz Museum Night, which, as an important joint effort of the museums in the city and region, invites visitors to a cultural long-distance run through an exciting and always surprising museum landscape with a special programme. This night is traditionally the best way to explore the wide range of our magnificent museum landscape on a par force ride. Once again, Museum Night 2023 will be a wonderful opportunity to see the familiar in a new light, discover the undiscovered and experience Chemnitz and the region as a cultural heavyweight."

During the Museum Night, guided tours of the participating institutions will also open doors to rooms that are otherwise inaccessible. For example, guests can take a look behind the scenes of the Oelsnitz/Erzgebirge Mining Museum before the official reopening of the historic industrial site. Jan Färber, director of the museum: "We will show how far the redesign has progressed and what guests can expect. There will be guided tours of the construction site and we will also be opening the exhibition mine, which many people miss, especially for the Chemnitz Museum Night. The Lugau-Oelsnitz mining district has close ties to Chemnitz. Hard coal once came from here as an important driving force for the industrial metropolis. With the Purple Path, we are reconnecting with the Capital of Culture."

The "Night Tour of Industrial Culture" sheds light on Saxony's former importance as the leading industrial region in Germany and the era in which Chemnitz earned its nickname "Saxon Manchester". Special programmes and stations in Chemnitz and the cultural region pick up on the thematic focus of the 4th Saxon State Exhibition in 2020, when the Museum Night could not take place due to the pandemic. Under the motto "#uncontemporary", the Klaffenbach moated castle, for example, is showing an exhibition on the early phase of the Industrial Revolution, which bears witness to the special aesthetic values of the age of industrialisation.

From a night tour of Saxony's industrial history to the fascinating possibilities of computer-aided augmentation of reality and modern art, Museum Night 2023 offers a wide range of topics. Artistic interventions using sound, light and movement open up a new perspective on what is already there. Guided tours and a wide range of activities allow visitors to adopt a historical perspective or immerse themselves in virtual reality - it's all a question of perspective.

Visitors are invited to discover the Chemnitz museum landscape, its collections and museum tasks from a new perspective and to be surprised by the variety of themes, artistic forms of expression, historical and technical masterpieces and the latest digital possibilities for educational work. The large number of cultural institutions, the density of the Chemnitz museum landscape and its thematic diversity are evidence of a lively and growing cultural landscape. For the first time, the Saxon State Archives - Chemnitz State Archives will be taking part in the Museum Night, as will the Galerie im HECK-ART and St Jakobi City Church after 2011 and 2003 respectively.

The participating museums in Chemnitz are also looking forward to the 22nd edition of the Chemnitz Museum Night. Prof. Dr Frédéric Bußmann, General Director of the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz: "I am delighted to once again be able to welcome our visitors to the museums in Chemnitz at night on 13 May for Museum Night under the motto 'Change of Perspective'. It is part of the essence of art to offer a change of perspective, to think about the world differently and make it possible to experience it in a new way. In this respect, it is a wonderful opportunity to experience other perspectives on museum visits and art with our audience. At Theaterplatz, the focus is on the medium of paper and at the Gunzenhauser Museum, the focus is on the changing lives of artists and their changing perspectives in different political systems. At the Schloßbergmuseum, you can travel back to the Middle Ages and experience a change of perspective at first hand." Dr Eberhard Neumann from the Deutsches SPIELEmuseum e. V. adds: "Under the motto 'Change of Perspective', everything at the Deutsches Spielemuseum during the Chemnitz Museum Night 2023 will focus on the playful shift between the offline and online worlds. We are providing hybrid parlour games for all age groups as well as games through space and time entirely in virtual reality."

Numerous museums and institutions in Chemnitz and the cultural region offer special programmes for children, young people and families under the "Night Owl" brand, which often start earlier. Hands-on activities, family tours and a children's game exchange invite you to explore and get creative. The German SPIELEmuseum and the smac - Staatliches Museum für Archäologie Chemnitz, whose team will be baking Stone Age bread with children and young people in Karree 72 between Reinhardtstraße 24 and 26, will open their doors to younger guests from 4 pm.

For the first time, a cooperation has been concluded with the 32nd Saxon Mozart Festival 2023 and the 32nd Days of Jewish Culture Chemnitz 2023. The programme booklet provides interested parties with information on disabled access to the participating museums and facilities for guests with limited mobility as well as information on offers for people with sensory impairments.

The smac - State Museum of Archaeology Chemnitz offers guided tours with words and signs.

Shuttle service for the Museum Night - on tour by bus:

Once again this year, a comprehensive mobility offer will give guests the opportunity to explore the various institutions in Chemnitz and the region freely and flexibly. In addition to the regular public transport service, there will once again be a special shuttle bus service. Guests can reach the facilities in the cultural region via the C11 city railway line of the Chemnitz model and a separate shuttle bus line to the buildings. As in the previous year, the special lines in Chemnitz will depart from in front of the Karl Marx Monument on Brückenstraße. The admission ticket entitles the holder to visit all participating facilities and is valid as a ticket on 13 May 2023 from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following day.

Ticket service:

The Museum Night ticket is available at a price of 10 euros (reduced 5 euros) and is also valid as a travel ticket. Admission is free for children and young people up to the age of 18. For them, the Night Owl ticket is valid as a ticket.

Tickets can be purchased immediately at the museums in the main programme during opening hours and on the day of the event at the box offices, at the CVAG Mobility Centre and at the Chemnitz Tourist Information Office as well as at the TIETZ. This year it is again not possible to purchase tickets at the excavation site "Fenster in die Erdgeschichte" (Glockenstraße 16, 09130 Chemnitz) in the run-up to or on the day of the Museum Night. Due to the current closure, tickets can only be purchased at the Oelsnitz Mining Museum (Pflockenstraße 28, 09376 Oelsnitz/Erzgebirge) at the box office.
