Press release by the Equal Opportunities Officer: Women's Day 2018 - "Women's stories"
The theme of this year's International Women's Day next Thursday, 8 March, is "Women's History(ies)". The city's Equal Opportunities Officer, Pia Hamann, and the network of women's initiatives in Chemnitz are also focussing on the 875-year history of our city in this anniversary year - from a female perspective, of course.
Women have always made their contribution to the development of society, but their achievements have often gone unnoticed, underestimated and unmentionable. The focus was and still is more on men and their achievements. We want to correct this and tell the story(s) from a female perspective. We want to publicise and honour strong women in the city from the Middle Ages to the present day.
A documentary film on this topic is currently being produced. For this, we were able to win over the renowned filmmaker Beate Kunath (Chemnitz/Berlin), who has already won film awards with documentaries such as "forbitten fruit" and "Raw Chicks. Berlin" and who has already won film awards with the films "...geradezu heraus. Irmtraud Morgner in Chemnitz" and "This One Special Day".
The new film "Hurray, it's a girl!" brings the female side of Chemnitz history to light. It introduces actresses, designers, writers, researchers, doctors and politicians. Who knows, for example, who were the first women to sit in the Chemnitz city parliament after the introduction of women's suffrage in 1918? Or who knows that Karl Schmidt-Rottluff's wife was a well-known photographer?
The premiere of the film will not take place until the summer, but excerpts will already be shown at the Women's Day event and participants and the director will present their views on the female side of Chemnitz in a round table discussion. The event will take place on Thursday, 8 March 2018 from 5.30 pm in the Festsaal of the Schlossbergmuseum. Participation is only possible after registration at gleichstellungsstelle(at)stadt-chemnitz.de
Representatives of the media are cordially invited
