Presentation of the Chemnitz Peace Prize postponed
New deadline on 1 September - submission deadline extended
The award ceremony for this year's Chemnitz Peace Prize has been postponed to 1 September. The citizens' association FUER CHEMNITZ e.V. and the jury have decided to do so in view of the current corona developments. The deadline for submitting proposals and applications for the Chemnitz Peace Prize 2022 has also been extended. There is now an opportunity to submit proposals until 5 March.
The current pandemic situation will most likely not allow for a ceremony to award the prize at the beginning of March. The award ceremony will therefore be postponed to 1 September 2022, World Peace Day. "The immediate character of the award ceremony should be maintained in the future," says Etelka Kobuß, Chemnitz Migration Officer. Egmont Elschner, spokesperson for the jury, adds: "We are extending the deadline for submitting proposals in order to reach even more stakeholders in the city."
Associations, initiatives and all active people are still called upon to propose to the jury people and activities in Chemnitz that are worthy of an award and are guided by the idea of peace. We are looking for people who stand up for basic values such as tolerance and democracy, who regard the integration of different cultures as an essential part of our coexistence, who take a stand against all forms of marginalisation, xenophobia and racism, who actively work for peace and who promote and support non-violent coexistence and are involved in this on a civic, voluntary and sustainable basis.
Frank Blumstein, Chairman of the FUER CHEMNITZ e.V. civic association, adds: "Peace and non-violence are the basis for everyone living together in the future European Capital of Culture Chemnitz and throughout the world. I am sure that worthy award winners will be found this year too."
Background:
The Chemnitz Peace Prize is awarded annually by the citizens' association FUER CHEMNITZ e.V. and the city's migration commissioner. The prize is regularly awarded in the context of the Chemnitz Peace Day, which commemorates the destruction of the city of Chemnitz on 5 March 1945 as a result of Germany's inhumane, hostile policies and the war it started.
