Preparatory work on the new extension to the Chemnitz Municipal Music School continues

The preparatory work for the new extension to the Chemnitz Municipal Music School continues to make progress. In the coming days, the former gymnasium, which was previously used as a rehearsal room next to the music school, will be cleared out and the internal dismantling of pipes will be carried out. Demolition of the former gymnasium will then begin at the start of next year, creating space for the new extension.

The gross floor area of the barrier-free new building will be 828 square metres (total area of the music school: 4850 square metres). In addition to a prestigious entrance area, a concert hall with adjoining rooms and a band rehearsal room, 6 classrooms are planned for the rock/pop/jazz and wind/brass departments.

The entire construction project will cost 2.35 million euros. The project should be completed by the end of 2014.

Due to the steady increase in student numbers in recent years and the continuing high demand, the music school has reached its capacity limits. Chemnitz City Council therefore decided in favour of extending the existing building at Gerichtsstraße 1.
