Predator accident at the zoo
This morning at around 6.50 a.m., a carnivore keeper was attacked and injured by an elderly female leopard. He was apparently able to fend off the leopard and closed all the enclosure doors behind the animal. However, it is still unclear how the accident could have happened. The incident is now being investigated internally and externally. The police have started an investigation.
The injured employee has been working at the predator sanctuary for 29 years and is experienced in caring for and feeding the animals.
The keeper was found in shock with bite wounds to his face in front of the enclosure by the second carnivore keeper. First aid was administered until the emergency doctor arrived. The keeper is currently undergoing surgery, but his life is not in danger. The second carnivore keeper, a 3rd year trainee, was also taken to hospital with symptoms of shock, but has already been discharged.
The zoo will remain closed today until 1pm.
