Positive balance of the Chemnitz Christmas market

Tomorrow, Saturday, 23 December, 8 pm, the Chemnitz Christmas market ends, traditionally on the day before Christmas Eve. At 23 days, this year's Christmas market was the shortest after the longest Christmas market of 29 days in 2022.

The organisers draw a consistently positive conclusion of this year's market activities before Christmas. More than 500,000 cups, plates and bowls were washed, as many crockery items as in the longer market period last year. The market was well attended overall.

Over 50 artists and artist groups, choirs and children's groups performed on the Christmas market stage this year and enriched the colourful hustle and bustle around Saxony's tallest Christmas tree (23.79 metres) with traditional Christmas music, rock, pop songs and many children's songs.

"The almost seamless organisation shows that the proverbial wheels meshed once again this year. A big thank you therefore goes to everyone involved," said Mayor Knut Kunze.

Stories about the Christmas market

The permanent lighting on the large Christmas tree once failed completely, but was repaired within 30 minutes by contract partner eins/inetz.

This year, two small children were found unaccompanied, but their parents, who had been called out, were able to take them home safe and sound.
A dog found on the grounds of the medieval market was also returned to its rightful owner at the end of a long day.

The market management had to provide medical assistance for eight people. There were no serious injuries or serious medical emergencies.

One burglar was caught in the act at a confectionery hut in the early hours of the morning in the first week with the help of security and handed over to the police. There were a total of three attempted break-ins at huts.

Once again this year, visitors to the Chemnitz Christmas market lost a wide variety of items, such as mobile phones, wallets, glasses, rucksacks, bags, etc. All items found were either returned to their owners or taken to the lost property office. One young woman was particularly pleased about an honest finder who had handed in her wallet with more than 300 euros in cash to the store management's organisation container. Another Christmas story with a happy ending.

After the Christmas market is before the Christmas market

After evaluating the Christmas market in January, the organisers are already looking ahead to 29 November 2024, when the Chemnitz Christmas Market 2024 will open. The application deadline for interested traders is 30 April 2024. By the middle of next year, it will be clear who will be at the Chemnitz Christmas Market 2024.
The organisation will begin booking the artists and making further plans in January. As every year, numerous comments and suggestions have been received from visitors, traders, caterers, tradespeople and participants. These are incorporated into the evaluation and taken into account wherever possible.

The best for last: the Chemnitz Christmas Market 2024 will last longer; next year, visitors can look forward to 25 days.

Notes

After the Christmas market closes tomorrow at 8 pm, work will begin immediately on dismantling the stalls on the market square, Neumarkt, Rosenhof, Jakobikirchplatz and in Innere Klosterstraße. The many small Christmas trees from the Chemnitz Christmas market can be collected again tomorrow from 4 pm. The Erzgebirge village goes into extra time

This year, for the first time, Chemnitz residents and guests can still enjoy the Christmas atmosphere with mulled wine and culinary delights in the city centre between the years.
From 27 to 30 December, daily from 12 noon to 9 pm, the Erzgebirgsdorf will continue on Düsseldorfer Platz and Richard-Möbius-Straße. This is the result of an initiative by "ChemnitzCity" and the City of Chemnitz's Department of Economic Affairs together with other partners.

In addition to retailers and restaurateurs, Chemnitz companies will also be presenting themselves and their job offers under the motto "Coming home". The event is aimed primarily at former Chemnitz residents who may be thinking of returning home. (see press release 796, dated 14 November 2023)
