As at 30 June 2026, 250,497 people had their main residence in the city of Chemnitz. This means that, as of mid-2026, the population figures showed 356 fewer residents than a year earlier: on 30 June 2025, according to the population register, 250,853 people were resident in Chemnitz. If people with a second home are included, Chemnitz had a population of 253,224 as at 30 June 2026.
The average age of Chemnitz residents has continued to rise slightly compared with the end of 2025. Whilst it stood at 46.18 years at the end of the year (31 December 2025), it had risen to 46.23 years by the end of June 2026. By comparison, the average age on 31 December 2024 was 46.09 years.
Of the residents with their main residence in Chemnitz, 212,297 held German citizenship (30 June 2025: 213,767). 38,200 were foreign nationals (30 June 2025: 37,086). This figure includes all foreign nationals living in Chemnitz, such as students at Chemnitz University of Technology, employees of Chemnitz-based companies, people who have lived here for many years, as well as refugees and asylum seekers.
Between July 2025 and June 2026, 12,397 people moved into the city, whilst 10,736 left. Looking at the corresponding period from July 2024 to June 2025, the migration figures stood at 11,900 people moving in and 10,196 moving out. This results in a positive net migration figure for the city of Chemnitz of 1,661 people for the period from July 2025 to June 2026 (comparative period July 2024 to June 2025: 1,704 people). These migration figures do not include arrivals at and departures from the Chemnitz initial reception centre.
The number of newborns in Chemnitz between June 2025 and May 2026 stood at 1,534. During the same period in 2024/2025, there were 1,659 newborns. The number of deaths in the period from June 2025 to May 2026 stood at 3,557; by comparison, 3,612 deaths were recorded in the same period in 2024/25.
This brings the natural population change for the period from June 2025 to May 2026 to minus 2,023 residents (June 2024 to May 2025: minus 1,953 residents).
This shows that the city’s ongoing population decline continues to be largely driven by birth rates that are significantly lower than death rates. The net migration gain recorded last year has so far only served to mitigate, rather than offset, this decline in population caused by the natural balance.
