At the end of last year, the population statistics for the city of Chemnitz recorded 214 more residents than a year earlier. As at 31 December 2024, 251,699 people had their main residence in the city (31 December 2023: 251,485). If you include people with a secondary residence, Chemnitz had 254,676 residents on the reporting date.
The average age of Chemnitz residents has risen again slightly compared to 2023. While it was 46.21 years at the end of 2022 and 46.06 years at the end of 2023, it rose slightly to 46.09 years in 2024 (as at 31 December).
Of the residents with their main place of residence, 214,744 had German citizenship (2023: 216,665) and 36,955 were foreigners (2023: 34,820). This includes all foreigners living in Chemnitz, such as students at Chemnitz University of Technology, employees of Chemnitz companies, people who have lived here for many years, as well as refugees and asylum seekers.
A total of 16,309 people moved to the city last year (2023: 19,672), while 14,100 people left (2023: 15,128).
The number of newborns in Chemnitz in 2024 was 1,648, compared to 1,775 newborns* in 2023. The number of deaths in 2024 was 3,591; in 2023, 3,717 deaths were registered.
Background
According to the population register of the city of Chemnitz, the number of inhabitants is approx. 6,200 inhabitants:inside above the updated number of inhabitants determined by the Statistical Office of the Free State of Saxony on the basis of the 2022 census as of November 2024.
A procedure developed by the Federal and State Statistical Offices was used to determine the census population as at 15 May 2022. The data provided to the state offices by the population registration authorities was supplemented by a household survey on a sample basis, statistically corrected if necessary and the results of the samples were then extrapolated to the entire population with a certain statistical uncertainty.
The population status determined by the City of Chemnitz via the population register at the end of each month, on the other hand, is based on an anonymised deduction from the population register on the reporting date, which includes all persons registered in Chemnitz on the reporting date.
Registrations and deregistrations in the population register take place continuously and, in the case of births and deaths, depend on the time of transmission from the relevant registry offices.
In Saxony, the cities of Leipzig, Annaberg-Buchholz and Chemnitz are currently trying to clarify the differences between these cities and the state authorities, as payments, such as key allocations, from the federal government and the Free State to the municipalities depend on the census figure.
