Population statistics 2023

The population statistics for the city of Chemnitz for 2023 show 2,621 more residents than in the previous year. As at 31 December 2023, 251,485 people had their main residence in the city. If you include people with a secondary residence, Chemnitz had 254,614 residents on the reporting date.

The average age of Chemnitz residents has fallen slightly compared to 2022. While it was 46.21 years in 2022, it had fallen to 46.06 years in 2023 (as at 31 December).

Of the residents with their main place of residence, 216,665 had German citizenship (2022: 218,687) and 34,820 were foreigners (2022: 30,177). This includes all foreigners living here, such as students at Chemnitz University of Technology, employees of Chemnitz companies, people who have lived here for many years, as well as refugees and asylum seekers.

A total of 19,672 people moved to the city last year (2022: 21,000), while 15,128 people left (2022: 13,915).

The number of new births in Chemnitz in 2023 was 1,761, compared to 1,889 births in 2022. The number of deaths in 2023 was 3,714; 3,753 deaths were registered in 2022*.
