Population statistics 2021

The city of Chemnitz's population statistics for 2021 show 1,405 fewer inhabitants than in the previous year. As at 31 December 2021, 243,646 people lived in the city as their main residence.
If you include people with a secondary residence, Chemnitz had 246,861 inhabitants on the reporting date.

The average age of Chemnitz residents has fallen slightly compared to 2020. While it was 46.62 years in 2020, it had fallen to 46.55 years in 2021 (as at 31 December).

Of the residents with their main place of residence, 220,716 had German citizenship (2020: 223,395) and 22,930 were foreigners (2020: 21,656). This includes, for example, students at Chemnitz University of Technology, employees of Chemnitz-based companies as well as citizens and refugees who have lived in the city for many years.

In total, 12,917 people moved to the city last year (2020: 11,388) and 12,261 people left (2020: 11,616).

The number of new births in Chemnitz in 2021 was 2,063, compared to 2,186 births in 2020. The number of deaths in 2021 was 4,024, while 3,926 deaths were registered in 2020.
