Population statistics 2020
The population statistics for 2020 show 1,857 fewer residents in Chemnitz than in the previous year. As at 31 December 2020, 245,051 people with their main residence lived in the city. If you also include people with a secondary residence, Chemnitz had 248,431 inhabitants on the reporting date.
Of the residents with their main residence, 223,395 had German citizenship (2019: 225,507) and 21,656 were foreigners (2019: 21,401). These include, for example, students at Chemnitz University of Technology, employees of Chemnitz-based companies as well as citizens and refugees who have lived in the city for many years.
A total of 11,388 people moved to the city last year (2019: 12,715), while 11,616 people left (2019: 12,222).
The number of new births in Chemnitz was 2,118 (as at 31 December 2020). However, the number of births in 2020 is still provisional, as many births are only reported in the course of the following month. In comparison, 2,130 births were recorded on 31 December 2019. A total of 2,226 births were finally registered for 2019.
The same applies to the number of deaths. This figure was 3,688 as at 31 December 2020. In 2019, 3,372 deaths were provisionally registered on 31 December 2019. The final figure for 2019 was 3,522 deaths.
