Population statistics 2019
The population statistics for 2019 show 813 fewer residents in Chemnitz than in the previous year. As at 31 December 2019, 246,908 people had their main residence in the city. If you also include people with a secondary residence, Chemnitz had 250,357 inhabitants on the reporting date.
Of the main residents, 225,507 had German citizenship (2018: 226,932) and 21,401 were foreigners (2018: 20,789). This includes, for example, students at Chemnitz University of Technology, employees of Chemnitz-based companies as well as citizens and refugees who have lived in the city for many years.
In total, 12,715 people moved to the city last year (2018: 13,422) and 12,222 people left (2018: 12,001).
The number of new births in Chemnitz was 2,130 (as at 31 December 2019). However, the number of births in 2019 is still provisional, as many births are only reported in the course of the following month. For comparison, 2,250 births were recorded on 31 December 2018. A final total of 2,326 births were registered for 2018. The same applies to the number of deaths. This figure was 3,372 as at 31 December 2019. In 2018, 3,337 deaths were provisionally registered on 31 December 2018. The final figure for 2018 was 3,473 deaths.
