Population balance: Chemnitz continues to grow steadily
2014 population statistics: Chemnitz had 243,605 inhabitants on 31 December 2014 - 1,428 more than in the previous year - significant improvement in net migration once again
An increase of 1,428 inhabitants - that is the provisional result of the 2014 population statistics. 243,605 people were living in the city as their main residence at the end of last year. At the end of 2013, there were 242,177 residents.
Once again, net migration had a positive impact, improving once more: Significantly more people are coming to Chemnitz than are leaving. A total of 17,106 people moved to the city last year, while 14,565 left. This means that the migration gain in 2014 was 2,541 inhabitants, compared to an increase of 2,054 in the previous year.
The net migration figures for 2014 also show that younger people in particular are moving to Chemnitz: With an increase of 2,541 people in net migration, 1,380 people were aged between 21 and 29. This was followed by the 16 to 20 age group with 622 and the 30 to 49 age group with 137 people.
"It is very pleasing that the trend has once again stabilised. Chemnitz continues to grow," says Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig. "The city attracts people because it is a good place to work and live, because there are good jobs and an attractive university here."
