"Plea for a contemporary Islam"
Dr Lale Akgün speaks at the adult education centre about liberal Islam
On Tuesday, 24 November 2015 at 7 p.m., Dr Lale Akgün will make a plea for a liberal interpretation of Islam at the adult education centre in the event hall of the TIETZ, Moritzstraße 20. Too often, Islam is one-sidedly equated with headscarves and Sharia law. In her lecture, the author and former member of the Bundestag argues in favour of a historical-critical interpretation of the Koran. Universal human rights and, above all, the complete equality of men and women are the foundations of liberal Islam. Admission is free.
Dr Lale Akgün was born in Istanbul and came to Germany at the age of nine. From 2002 to 2009, she was an SPD member of the Bundestag and spokesperson on migration policy. She is also an author and has published several books.
The event is part of the series "KONTROVERS - Labour, economy and social issues under scrutiny". In this series, the Adult Education Centre, the German Trade Union Confederation and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation take up the topics of work, the economy and social issues and invite a panel of experts to take part in debates.
