Playground in the city park reopens for Children's Day
Flood-proof climbing facility built
Once again this year, a playground will be opened to the public in the presence of representatives of the German Red Cross and the newly elected children's commissioner Ute Spindler on Children's Day on 1 June at 2 pm.
The Parks Department invested 58,000 euros in the renovation of the playground in Claußschen Park on Beckerstrasse. The City of Chemnitz received financial support for this project from a donation of 1,000 euros from the German Red Cross. The facility was planned by landscape architect Lutz Beier from Iproplan, Chemnitz. Landschaftsgestaltung GmbH from Annaberg-Buchholz was commissioned with the renovation.
Background:
The playground is one of the oldest in the town. It was laid out over 100 years ago by the then Director of Horticulture Otto Werner and has been renovated several times since then. During the 2002 floods, the playground was flooded for the first time and repaired again. It flooded again in 2010. Before it could be renovated, it was damaged again by flooding in 2013.
As the city park is a listed building and is partially at risk of flooding, general conditions had to be observed during the renewed renovation and the relevant authorities had to be involved. After the second flood damage, it was decided to install a smaller play area outside the flooded area, as it was not possible to find an alternative location nearby. A play area was created in the form of a wooden climbing structure.
