Playground and fitness trail can already be used

First parts of the new leisure areas in Klaffenbach completed - the garden of tranquillity and exercise elements can be used in the Morgenleite park

The first sections of the construction work on the public spaces in the Capital of Culture intervention areas in Klaffenbach and Morgenleite Park are now ready for use. The playground at the Klaffenbach moated castle and the fitness trail in the Tiergarten forest have been completed. In addition to the Garden of Tranquillity, the eleven exercise elements in the Morgenleite park can now be used for sporting activities.

In Klaffenbach , measures were planned in three areas as part of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 to further enhance the surroundings of the moated castle: the expansion of the playground at the moated castle, the redesign of the cultural park and the construction of a fitness trail in the Tiergartenwald forest south of the moated castle.

The extension of the playground and the newly created exercise trail in the Tiergarten forest were completed last week and are now open for use. The playground at Klaffenbach moated castle has been extended with a nest swing, a sand/gravel playground, a balancing course and a toddler slide. The neighbouring Tiergarten forest to the south was upgraded with a fitness trail with nine different elements.

Work has now begun on upgrading the cultural park. The paths are being renovated and a covered seating area is being built, which will function as a "green classroom" in future. From there, it will be possible to discover nature. Objects for species conservation such as an insect hotel, a deadwood window and a lizard habitat will be built for this purpose. Educational boards provide information about the natural conditions in the area.

A grand opening of the cultural park, the playground and the fitness trail is expected to take place in August at the local festival.

The work will be carried out by the construction company Fachcenter Garten + STL-Bau GmbH.

Construction supervision will be carried out by the sLandArt office. The construction costs amount to around 255,000 euros. The project is being co-financed with funds from the Capital of Culture funding programme.

Parts of the intervention area in Morgenleite Park can also be used with immediate effect. In addition to the Garden of Tranquillity, eleven exercise elements can now be used for sporting activities. The water playground, which will complete the Morgenleite Park intervention area, is currently still under construction.

Background:

The public squares are the result of intensive participation by people in the neighbourhoods and localities. The stakeholders from the city's neighbourhoods have put a lot of thought into the project and, together with their citizens, have selected a public space to be redesigned as part of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025. Each of the eight areas of the citizens' platforms and each of the eight incorporated localities will receive a maximum of 325,000 euros. For example, a pavilion in Küchwald, a rest area on the Chemnitz Valley cycle path, a themed circular hiking trail around the village of Kleinolbersdorf-Altenhain and a lift at Wittgensdorf primary school have been implemented, creating a barrier-free event space in the assembly hall.

The public squares are one of the 30 intervention areas of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025. They are the city of Chemnitz's urban development project for the Capital of Culture, which now involves an investment of over 60 million euros.
