Planting season for fruit trees until April
Presentation and tasting of winter apple varieties: 22 February, 6 p.m., Environmental Centre
The local ecology agenda group invites you to a presentation and tasting of winter apple varieties on 22 February at 6 pm at the Environmental Centre, Henriettenstraße 5. Recommendations will be given for planting fruit trees in your own garden and on the storage life of the individual varieties. The speaker will be Reiner Amme from the Association for the Environment and Nature Conservation. Admission is free.
Growing your own fruit is an active contribution to climate protection. Avoiding fertilisers, transport routes and technical storage saves considerable amounts of CO2. Fruit trees are also a favourite habitat for insects and songbirds. The possibilities of storing apples yourself are better than is assumed. According to an observational study by the Charité hospital in Berlin, eating old apple varieties can even alleviate the symptoms of apple allergies and hay fever.
Under the name Apple 2000, NABU, BUND, the Parks Department and others are participating in an orchard project to preserve as many of the 2,000 apple varieties found in Germany as possible in Chemnitz and to inspire citizens to plant the resulting fruit in their own gardens.
In open dialogue groups of the local agenda, stakeholders from the public, civil society, research and administration exchange views on topics of sustainable urban development, initiate projects and organise events.
