Planting season: 173 new street trees on eight streets in Chemnitz

Planting season for street trees, which fulfil important urban design and functional tasks and at the same time have a variety of positive effects for people and the environment: The trees reduce dust and noise, improve air quality, provide shade in summer and, in the sum of their qualities, also have a direct influence on people's well-being. There are currently around 23,000 street trees in Chemnitz. One of the tasks of the City of Chemnitz is to maintain this stock, keep it safe for traffic, expand it where appropriate and necessary and close gaps that have arisen due to necessary felling. The Parks Department has also commissioned street tree planting for the planting season from autumn 2012 to spring 2013: 173 new trees will be planted on eight streets in Chemnitz. The contract sum invested amounts to around 214,000 euros. The planting work will be carried out by the company Fachcenter Garten+STL-Bau GmbH from Heinersdorfergrund.

As soon as the tree nurseries begin delivery, seven hazel trees will be planted in Chemnitz at the beginning of the 45th calendar week (from 5 November), initially in the new road construction areas on Kantstrasse and eleven elms on Dürerstrasse. Also in autumn 2012, 19 black locust trees will be planted on Trützschlerstraße and eleven Norway maples on Oberfrohnaer Straße.

By May 2013, the company will also carry out replacement planting on Glösaer Strasse (24 elms) and Huttenstrasse (30 Norway maples) as part of its overall contract, as well as supplementing the existing stock of street trees on Weststrasse with 25 chestnuts and three Norway maples and on Waldenburger Strasse with 43 elms. For the tree planting to supplement the existing trees, previously partially sealed areas in the footpath area will be broken up to restore the original tree locations and give all the trees the necessary root space. Before the new street trees can take their place, old trees must be felled at 27 locations on Glösaer-, Hutten-, West- and Waldenburger Straße.Due to their very poor condition - 70 to 80 per cent of the tree crown is already dead and the crown and trunk of the trees are affected by rotting and cracks - they pose a danger to pedestrians and other road users.and other road users.
