Planting of trees planned on six road sections in Chemnitz

Initial preparatory work will start at the end of October

The planting season for street trees has started again. The trees reduce dust and noise, improve air quality, provide shade in summer and, in the sum of their qualities, also have a direct influence on people's well-being.

There are currently around 23,000 street trees in Chemnitz. One of the tasks of the City of Chemnitz is to maintain this stock, keep it safe for traffic, expand it where appropriate and necessary and close gaps that have arisen due to necessary felling.

Following the planting of 112 new trees on six streets in the city area in the previous planting season from autumn 2014 to the beginning of May 2015, the Parks Department has now been commissioned to plant a further 56 trees on two road sections, Sachsenring and Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße, for the autumn 2015/spring 2016 planting season.

The contract is worth around 85,000 euros. The planting work will be carried out by the company Fachcenter Garten+STL-Bau GmbH from Hauptmannsgrün. Planting will begin in November.

The preparatory work will start at the end of October. Replacement planting of 38 maple trees is planned on Sachsenring (between Zschopauer Straße and Geibelstraße). On Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße, 18 elm trees will be planted on the right-hand side of the road between Zschopauer Straße and Bernsdorfer Straße. New tree discs will also be created in the footpath area.

Furthermore, the services for planting 59 young trees on three road sections in Chemnitz-Grüna and on Reichenbrander Straße have been put out to tender and are expected to be commissioned by the end of November 2015.

Once the contract has been awarded, 14 standard trees (ash trees) will be planted in existing grass verges in Chemnitz-Grüna on Chemnitzer Straße during the planting season until spring 2016. In Baumgartenstraße, six lime trees will be planted in newly created tree discs

In addition, twelve narrow-crowned maples and nine bird cherry trees will be planted on August-Bebel-Straße. Three still vital spherical maples will be replanted in Reichenbrander Straße. In addition, 15 new sycamore trees will be planted on Reichenbrander Straße.

A total of 45 old trees will have to be felled on four of the streets mentioned (12 on Sachsenring, five on Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße, 12 on August-Bebel-Straße and 16 on Reichenbrander Straße), which pose a threat due to their very poor condition (such as rotting and cracks in the trunk or crown or crowns that are 70 to 80 per cent dead).

Last but not least, around 90 trees on Stollberger Strasse near Carl-Bobach-Strasse and Wenzel-Werner-Strasse are to be replaced in spring 2016. A separate press release will be issued once the current tree felling work has been completed.
