Plans for the redesign of Klosterstraße and Webergasse

As a result of the "Stadtbummel 2025" citizens' survey at the end of 2016, Chemnitz residents were asked about their wishes and ideas for the city centre. It emerged that the people of Chemnitz want the city centre to be a meeting place as well as a place to shop and experience. The topics of children and families, catering and places to linger play a prominent role. When asked about a "pub mile", Innere Klosterstraße with its old building charm stood out among the respondents.
Against this background, GGG is planning to develop Innere Klosterstraße more strongly in terms of catering, to attract more cafés and restaurants and thus establish a pub mile in Chemnitz. A key prerequisite for this is the relocation of individual businesses from Innere Klosterstraße. Talks have already been held with these tenants, the concept has been presented and the plans have been approved in principle. In conjunction with the necessary relocations, a shopping centre is to be developed on Webergasse at the same time, which will pursue a new retail concept with a multi-label store, among other things.
A location analysis commissioned by GGG from the German Hotel and Restaurant Association (DEHOGA) has shown potential for a pub mile and promised success if implemented consistently. At the same time, DEHOIGA recommended measures such as outdoor seating, radiant heaters, the extension of seasonal opening hours, awnings, children's play facilities, WLAN and a marketing concept.
Various other enhancement measures are also planned. For example, a water feature is to be installed on Jakobikirchplatz. The planning for this is currently underway. Implementation is set to begin at the end of the year and completion is planned for the course of next year, depending on the weather. Additional benches are to be installed this summer to invite people to linger. Further ideas are currently being examined for feasibility.
