People's perception of safety in Chemnitz city centre has improved significantly since the security point was set up at the central bus stop. This was the conclusion drawn today by Lord Mayor Sven Schulze and Police Commissioner Carsten Kaempf.
Since the joint security point was set up in mid-June 2024, the police and city security service have been able to process almost 630 concerns from citizens there up to last week - around 115 per month. There has been a significant increase in enquiries and reports since the start of the Chemnitz Christmas market.
Lord Mayor Sven Schulze: "We are very satisfied because we have created a visible presence and a point of contact for Chemnitz residents who need help and support. It is also a test run for the year of the Capital of Culture, which places increased demands on us. Above all, the preventative nature of the safety centre will help to improve people's objective and subjective sense of safety."
Police Commissioner Carsten Kaempf: "It's a success story. The goal of creating a sustainable subjective sense of security has been achieved, as this contact point enables a presence, positive contact with citizens and the fastest possible intervention. We also receive positive feedback from retailers in the city centre."
Special cases that reached the security point included, for example, a missing girl from Glauchau being recognised by a citizen. The colleagues from the security point were able to hand the girl over to her parents. Information from members of the public also enabled stolen bicycles to be recovered and the victim of an assault to be helped quickly and the perpetrators traced.
The security point is open Monday to Friday from 3 pm to 10 pm. During the Chemnitz Christmas market, it is also open on Sundays from 3 pm to 9 pm.
