Pedestrian bridge in Küchwaldpark
Current information on the status of construction work
After a break in the construction work on site for technical reasons, the bridge over the Sauborn will now be installed shortly - subject to suitable weather conditions.
The approx. 10 metre long and 3.75 metre wide pedestrian bridge with a slightly arched steel structure with wooden decking and tubular railings is being built based on the historical model, as the Küchwaldpark is a listed area.
After the reinforced concrete structures of the abutments had already been completed in mid-October, the excavation pits were then filled in and the ground profiled at the new foundations. The new abutments were measured in order to produce a concrete working plan for the steel superstructure of the bridge. This construction plan had to be approved by a test engineer. This caused delays, as there was a need for changes to several details of the design (e.g. components for supporting the bridge). Once the design had been approved, production and coating of the steel parts began at the start of December 2016.
As soon as production is complete, the steel parts will be assembled as soon as possible, subject to weather conditions. The production and assembly of the bridge structure will be realised by dSb Dechsel Stahlbau GmbH, Stollberg.
The wooden bridge deck will then be installed and the path connections made. Subject to weather conditions, the construction work should then essentially be completed by the end of March 2017. The construction costs total 125,000 euros.
The replacement construction of the pedestrian bridge is intended to restore the path connection (Sechserweg) from the Küchwaldring road (at the junction with Altendorfer Straße) to the main path (Cottaschneise) in Küchwaldpark.
The bridge over the Sauborn had to be closed in autumn 2012 after storm damage - a huge beech tree had fallen onto the bridge - and was later completely dismantled.
