Peaceful Revolution memorial gets a new square in front of the Luxor
The memorial established in the area in front of the Luxorpalast in Chemnitz to commemorate the events associated with the Peaceful Revolution of 1989 in Chemnitz has been given a new location. The reason for the relocation, which was carried out by the construction yard of the City of Chemnitz's civil engineering department from Monday 1 October 2012, is that the site, which was inaugurated a year ago on 7 October 2011, had been damaged several times by vehicles following its installation and handover. For this reason, the city of Chemnitz looked for a new location directly on site.
In consultation with the artist Steffen Volmer, who was responsible for the design of the memorial, a new location was found and chosen in the small paved area next to the bus shelter at the Luxorpalast bus stop. Once the concrete slabs have been installed, the height of the paved area will be adapted to the monument. A granite kerb with an approx. 6 cm kerb stop will be installed as a boundary to the paving slabs in front of the Luxor Palace to prevent traffic from driving over them in future.
Work to implement the unity memorial will begin on 1 October 2012 and will be completed by the end of the 40th calendar week. On 15 December 2010, the Chemnitz City Council decided to create a memorial to the Peaceful Revolution in Chemnitz. A working group has agreed on the content and form of the memorial site. The City of Chemnitz applied to the Sächsische Aufbaubank for funding of 15,000 euros to realise the design of the memorial created by Steffen Volmer; the City of Chemnitz's own funds amounted to 1,667 euros.
