Peace banner at Chemnitz town hall

From Friday morning, 1 March, colourful peace banners will once again advertise the Chemnitz Peace Day on 5 March on the façade of Chemnitz Town Hall. Gerald Richter, initiator of the XXL Peace Gallery, will be available to answer questions on Friday at 11 a.m. in front of the town hall. At this time, the caretakers of the town hall will be seen putting the finishing touches to the banners.
The seven metre long banners were designed by pupils who took part in the art project initiated by Aktion ©. "For the first time, a second workshop took place at the Chemnitz Entdecker-Schule, which Aktion © organised in preparation for the thematic focus 'INCLUSION - Together for Peace'," reports Gerald Richter from the citizens' initiative Aktion ©. "From 7 February to 6 March, we will be presenting an exhibition by the Montessori School on the topic of inclusion in the Jakobi Church together with the banners from the Entdecker School, as well as a daytime programme with theatre, pictures and music on 5 March. A city can only find peace if it includes everyone, including people with disabilities or migrant backgrounds". A total of 21 new seven-metre-long banners have been created, which will be displayed at the town hall as well as at and in the Roter Turm gallery and in the Jakobi church. The total number of banners has thus grown to 135, which corresponds to an area of 1,100 square metres. 54 of these were presented in Dresden's Kreuzkirche church in November 2018.
On 5 March, Chemnitz Peace Day commemorates the bombing of the city 74 years ago and all the victims of the Second World War. Every year, thousands of people from Chemnitz stand up for peace, democracy and against right-wing extremism and xenophobia.
