Peace banner at Chemnitz town hall
Since today, colourful peace banners on the façade of Chemnitz Town Hall have once again been advertising the Chemnitz Peace Day on 5 March. They were designed by Chemnitz schoolchildren who took part in the art project initiated by Aktion C. "With the new banners, we have reached the mark of 1000 metres of painted posters," said Gerald Richter, initiator of the campaign.
When designing the peace pictures, young people creatively explored the themes of peace, tolerance and human rights. Last year, 18 organisations with around 350 young people took part, spending a total of around 4,000 hours of their free time. Following the Chemnitz Peace Day, 24 Chemnitz peace banners will be on display for the first time in an exhibition in the Dresden Kreuzkirche. The exhibition will open on 8 March at 11:15 a.m. with pupils from the Montessori School.
On 5 March, Chemnitz Peace Day commemorates the bombing of the city 70 years ago and all the victims of the Second World War. Every year, thousands of people from Chemnitz take a stand for peace, democracy and against right-wing extremism and xenophobia.
