Peace banner at Chemnitz town hall

On Friday morning, 28 February, colourful peace banners will once again be displayed on the façade of Chemnitz Town Hall. They will advertise the Chemnitz Peace Day on 5 March. At around 11 a.m., the caretakers of the town hall will be seen carrying out the final touches.
The seven-metre-long banners were designed by schoolchildren who took part in the art project initiated by Aktion ©. "The interest in designing banners was so great that three one-week workshops were held for the first time in preparation for Peace Day," reports Gerald Richter from the citizens' initiative Aktion ©. "In addition to the workshop at the Montessori School, the Entdeckerschule and the Evangelische Schulzentrum Chemnitz organised workshops, which were supervised by the Chemnitz painter Marian Kretschmer."
A total of 30 new seven-metre-long banners were created, more than ever before in one year. They are displayed at the town hall, at and in the Roter Turm gallery, in the foyer of the Stadthalle, at the opera house and in the Jakobi church. The total number of banners has thus grown to 165, which corresponds to a total length of 1,155 metres.
56 peace banners were presented in Dresden's Kreuzkirche in November 2019 for the Federal Synod of the Protestant Churches of Germany under the motto "Peace must yet be made". The Chemnitz peace messages took centre stage at the synod's opening service, which was broadcast nationwide by ZDF.
The Chemnitz Peace Day on 5 March commemorates the bombing of the city 75 years ago and all the victims of the Second World War. Every year, thousands of people from Chemnitz take a stand for peace, democracy and against right-wing extremism and xenophobia.
