Peace banner at Chemnitz town hall

On Friday, 26 February, at around 9.30 a.m., seven-metre-long colourful peace banners will once again be displayed on the façade of Chemnitz Town Hall. They promote the Chemnitz Peace Day on 5 March. Under the watchful eyes of pupils from the Montessori School in Chemnitz, who took part in the art project initiated by Aktion ©, the caretakers of the town hall complete the final touches.
23 new banners were created this year. Of the total of 188 banners that now exist, more than half (108) were designed by pupils at the Montessori school. Since 2014, workshops have been held at the school every year during the autumn holidays under the direction of Katharina Kästel-Sasse, a teacher at the Montessori school.
The banners are presented at the town hall, at and in the Roter Turm gallery, in the foyer of the Stadthalle, at the opera house and in the Jakobi church.
Chemnitz Peace Day on 5 March commemorates the bombing of the city 76 years ago and all the victims of the Second World War. Every year, thousands of people from Chemnitz stand up for peace, democracy and against right-wing extremism and xenophobia.
