Peace banner at Chemnitz town hall

On Friday, 25 February at 9.30 a.m., the seven-metre-long colourful peace banners will once again be displayed on the façade of Chemnitz Town Hall. They promote the Chemnitz Peace Day on 5 March. Under the watchful eyes of pupils from the Montessori School in Chemnitz, who took part in the art project initiated by Aktion ©, the caretakers of the town hall will complete the final touches.
From 10 am, teacher Katharina Kästel-Sasse and pupils from the workshop will answer questions about their works.
In preparation for this year's Peace Day, 29 new banners have been designed. This brings the total number of banners to 213. With 120 banners, the Montessori School Chemnitz had the largest share. Since 2014, workshops have been held at the school every year during the autumn and winter holidays under the direction of Katharina Kästel-Sasse, a teacher at the Montessori school. During the winter holidays, a workshop dedicated to Stefan Heym took place for the first time at the Dr.-Wilhelm-André-Gymnasium, where more banners were created.
The banners will be presented at the town hall, at and in the Galerie Roter Turm, at the opera house and in St Jakobikirche.
Chemnitz Peace Day on 5 March commemorates the bombing of the city 77 years ago and all the victims of the Second World War. Every year, thousands of people from Chemnitz stand up for peace, democracy and against right-wing extremism and xenophobia.
