Participants in the national "Jugend musiziert" competition have been announced
After the two competition weekends in Zwickau, the jury's decision has been finalised:
32 Saxon soloists, 149 musicians in 45 ensembles and three accompanists will once again come to western Saxony at Whitsun to compete with the best from all over Germany at the national "Jugend musiziert" competition from 25 May to 2 June.
33 young musicians from Chemnitz Municipal Music School took part in the state competition in Zwickau. They all received a first or second prize.
Nancy Gibson, Director of Chemnitz Municipal Music School, said: "Chemnitz can be very proud of all our young musicians. They have all spent many months preparing and perfecting challenging programmes."
Ten participants in age group II - a cello quintet, a bassoon duo and a clarinet trio - achieved excellent results, but are still too young to take part in the upcoming national competition.
The music school's accordion ensemble, two singers and the "jumu open" group for experimental music - ten musicians in total - will take part in the national competition in Whitsun week, which will also be held in Zwickau this year.
The special thing about the Jugend musiziert competition is that no entry fees are charged and all participants are offered a counselling session with the jury at regional and state level.
"The guidelines for these discussions have been refined in recent years in order to provide helpful tips in a sensitive and respectful manner," says Nancy Gibson, who is also Chair of the Youth Music 2023 Regional Committee for the Chemnitz region.
"There is no typical Olympic podium for first, second and third place. There can be any number of first prizes in each category, depending on how the candidates are assessed by the juries. Therefore, the participants endeavour to do their best, but are not really in direct competition with each other for a prize. This makes sense in a music competition that is not about 'faster, higher, further', but in some ways an art form where the judgement is extremely subjective," explains Gibson.
She recommends that interested parties visit the national competition in Zwickau and West Saxony later in the spring: "Anyone who has no idea of the incredible talent and discipline of the younger generation, or wants to hear lots and lots of beautiful music, will be thrilled!"
