Partial opening of the Weststraße primary school
Lord Mayor Sven Schulze and Simone Kalew, Managing Director of GGG, presented the new Weststraße primary school to representatives of the media on a tour today.
Since Monday 29 August - the start of the new school year - the school building at Weststraße 19 has also come back to life. Two first-year classes and a preparatory class (VK) are now learning in the renovated existing building on Weststraße. In the following years, they will each be supplemented by two enrolment classes, so that the school is expected to be fully occupied from the 2025/26 school year.
In April 2020, the city council decided to completely renovate the school site and build a new extension and a single-field sports hall. A two-form entry primary school has been built in the former vocational school on the corner of Weststraße and Reichsstraße.
The existing building on Weststraße was completely renovated. Among other things, the façade was refurbished in accordance with listed building regulations. The roof is now completely covered with slate in accordance with the preservation order. The windows in the basement were enlarged to create bright, friendly day-care rooms and new soundproof windows were installed. The new interior thermal insulation, soundproofed floors and enlarged classrooms also enable learning in a modern environment.
The existing building also received a modern extension on Reichsstraße, which will be put into operation from March 2023. This will guarantee the number of rooms required from the 2023/24 school year.
The extension is connected to the existing listed building without barriers. There are barrier-free entrances and a lift. A photovoltaic system will be installed on the green roof of this building. The new building will also house a canteen with a canteen kitchen and an exit to the schoolyard.
The entire school complex has a modern IT network with up-to-date equipment in every classroom.
A new single-field sports hall, which is also accessible underground and barrier-free from the school building, will be available for sports lessons from spring 2023. In addition to school sports, club sports can then also take place in the hall, as above-ground access is guaranteed. There is a football pitch on the roof of the sports hall.
The building complex includes the schoolyard area, which has been completely remodelled while preserving the old trees, the outdoor sports areas, such as the running track and long jump pit, and a school garden.
Access to the site will be via Emil-Rosenow-Straße and, for safety reasons, will not affect the school grounds.
The costs total approximately 15.2 million euros, of which 4.4 million euros are state and federal subsidies. The construction project is being realised by KommunalBau Chemnitz GmbH (KBC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Grundstücks- und Gebäudewirtschafts GmbH (GGG).
In addition to the new Weststraße primary school, there are five other primary schools in School District II: the Emanuel Gottlieb Flemming primary school, the Altendorf primary school, the Pablo Neruda primary school, the Gebrüder Grimm primary school and the Obere Luisenschule primary school.
