Part of the exhibition "Sixteen Objects - Seventy Years of Yad Vashem" comes from Chemnitz
Lord Mayor Sven Schulze attends exhibition opening in Berlin
On Tuesday, 24 January, Lord Mayor Sven Schulze will take part in the opening of the exhibition "Sixteen Objects - Seventy Years of Yad Vashem" in the German Bundestag.
The exhibition organised by the Friends of Yad Vashem shows 16 objects from the 16 federal states of Germany. Saxony is represented by an exhibit from a Jewish family from Chemnitz. On display is the Margulies family piano, which was in the flat of Menosze/Menasche Margulies and Ruchel Leija in Chemnitz. On 24 March 1939, the family left Germany by plane and emigrated to Haifa. A shipping container arrived a short time later with their belongings, including their piano.
"I see it as a miracle that 15-year-old Szalay Margulies from Chemnitz managed to bring his family and his piano to safety in 1939. I am glad that this piano with its extraordinary history is coming back to Germany for a short time. As Chemnitz is preparing for the European Capital of Culture, I can't think of a more fitting object," says Ruth Ur, curator of the "Sixteen Objects" exhibition and managing director of the Friends of Yad Vashem.

To mark the annual Holocaust Remembrance Day on 27 January, the Berlin-based Friends of Yad Vashem and the Yad Vashem Memorial (Jerusalem/Israel) have designed the exhibition "Sixteen Objects - Seventy Years of Yad Vashem" this year. The exhibition can be visited in the Bundestag in Berlin from 25 January to 17 February 2023.
The exhibition features 16 objects from Yad Vashem - they tell the stories of people who fled Germany during the Nazi dictatorship, often with few possessions. They are objects from everyday life that tell extraordinary stories. One object comes from each of the 16 federal states.
