Parks department plants thousands of new trees
More than 400 new trees in the city this spring
This spring, the City of Chemnitz Green Space Department is planting 405 trees in the city centre and a further 6,000 in the city forest.
In the first half of May, a total of 74 new trees will be planted in 18 different locations in public green spaces and parks. These are replacement plantings for trees felled for traffic safety reasons and new plantings to enhance green spaces. These are in detail: Stadtpark (25 trees), Küchwaldpark (5), Lessingplatz (2), Park Am Falkeplatz (5), Schloßteichpark (4), Neue Schloßpark (2), Park der Opfer des Faschismus (8), Zschopauer Platz (1), Marie-Luise-Pleißner Park (1), Schönherrpark (1), Luisenplatz (1), Schloßbergpark (2), Bürgerpark Gablenz (3), Ernst-Enge-Straße 28-88 (2), Ferdinandstraße/pond opposite the cemetery (2), Rödelwaldstraße/green space (2), An den Weiden (2), Kastanienweg/An den Weiden (1) and Nordplatz (1).
The young trees are cared for by the arborists of the Parks Department until they are 15 years old; there are already around 4,000 young trees throughout the city.
Around 200 to 300 young trees are added every year. Consistent maintenance pruning, such as clearance pruning, crown development pruning and training pruning, lays the foundation for the development of healthy, resistant and beautiful trees. These young trees are watered using irrigation bags and mobile irrigation technology.
In addition, trees are also planted by companies, specifically in the green areas of Heinrich-Zille-Straße (7 trees), Schloßstraße (1), Brühl (3) and Elisenstraße (1).
As announced, a total of 93 trees of species such as maple, oak, ash, willow, hazel, lime and wild and ornamental fruit trees have now been replanted as replacements in the following green spaces following the felling in the winter half-year 2021/22. This concerns in detail City entrance Dresdner Straße/Frankenberger Straße (former Panzer site and former fountain opposite), the green link Hermann-Löns-Straße, Am Hexenberg in Grüna and the green corridor on Eisenweg/Am Harthwald.
Planting from the "Sustainably out of the crisis" funding programme begins
Since 21 April, a total of 98 fruit trees have been planted in the Gablenzbach green corridor along Augustusburger Straße from Hans-Sachs-Straße to Adelsbergstraße. 85 of these are ornamental fruit trees such as ornamental apples, ornamental cherries and pears in various varieties, with the main focus on the flowering aspect. The remaining 13 fruiting fruit trees are suitable for consumption under the motto "Edible City". These are the plum, apple and cherry varieties.
They are planted in nursery quality. The standard trees have a trunk circumference of twelve to 14 centimetres and a root ball. Mobile watering bags with a capacity of 50 to 60 litres of water make watering easier. The funding of 90 per cent includes planting and completion care this year. The maintenance services will continue until 2025 from the city's budget.
In addition, a total of 133 different fruiting trees are currently being planted along Fraunhoferstrasse with funding from the "Sustainably out of the crisis" economic stimulus programme as a contribution to more climate-resilient urban greenery. These include three sweet chestnuts (Castanea sativa), three walnut trees (Juglans regia 'Franquette'), five hazel trees (Corylus colurna), six Thüthuringiaca (Sorbus x thuringiaca 'Fastigita'), six Swedish rowan (Sorbus intermedia 'Brouwers'), 18 bird cherries (Prunus avium 'Plena'), 15 wild cherries (Prunus padus 'Schloss Tiefurth'), 15 scarlet cherries (Prunus sagentii), six Chinese wild pears (Pyrus calleryana 'Chanticleer'), 16 crab apples (Malus sylvestris), 16 cherries (Malus sylvestris) and six cherries (Pyrus calleryana 'Chanticleer').apples (Malus sylvestris), 17 ornamental apples (Malus 'Wintergold'), 17 Toringo apples (Malus toringo) and six standard apples (fruit-bearing old apple varieties).
Planting in spring 2022 in the municipal forest of the city of Chemnitz
Around 6,000 forest trees will also be replanted in the municipal forest (Zeisigwald and Saidenbach). The main trees to be planted there are silver fir, sessile oak, hornbeam, bird cherry, mountain elm, field maple, sweet chestnut, hazel and white mulberry.
