Overview of construction work at Chemnitz schools during the summer holidays

Of the 79 municipal schools and school facilities in the city of Chemnitz, around half have been completely refurbished to date. This has been possible thanks to the consistent provision of municipal funds and financial support from the Free State of Saxony. The refurbishment of school buildings will continue to play an important role in municipal investment activities in the future. Preparatory measures were already taken during the summer holidays. Measures have also been finalised.

Speech therapy school Ernst Busch

Construction work on the new location of the speech therapy school on Ernst-Wabra-Straße begins after the holidays. During the holidays, the primary school and after-school care centre moved to the rooms of the evening secondary school on Arno-Schreiter-Straße. The construction project includes the refurbishment of the school, sports hall and outdoor facilities as well as a new extension. The costs are estimated at 16 million euros. The construction project is scheduled for completion in February 2022.

Heinrich Heine Primary School

The school was moved to the J.-A.-Comenius primary school during the holidays. This creates the necessary construction space for the interior renovation of the building, which will begin in September. Construction is scheduled for completion in July 2021 at a cost of 2.7 million euros.

Primary school Rabenstein

The newly constructed outbuilding was put into operation during the holidays. The building includes a wood chip store, the boiler room and other functional rooms. This lays the foundations for utilising wood waste, including from the City of Chemnitz's wood resources, to generate heat in the future. At the same time, completion marks the provisional conclusion of the overall project "General refurbishment of the school building and sports hall for Rabenstein primary school". The outbuilding was constructed between September 2018 and June 2019 with a budget of 420,000 euros.

Janusz Korczak School, school specialising in mental development

The school is currently being completely renovated with a budget of 4.4 million euros. The construction work on the vacant school is expected to last until May 2020.

Josephinenschule, sports hall Agnesstraße

The refurbishment, which began in June last year, was completed during the summer holidays. Among other things, the sports hall was renovated to improve its energy efficiency and the functional extension was extended. The hall roof was upgraded, the hall floor lowered and underfloor heating installed. The functional extension has been equipped with sufficiently large changing rooms and sanitary facilities as well as new disabled changing rooms and toilets and a sports instructors' room. The fire protection has been revised and adapted to the current regulations. In addition, the listed clinker brick façade was renovated and painting work was carried out on the roof box (stencil painting) in line with listed building requirements. The costs for the project totalled 1.2 million euros.

Glösa primary school

Work on the old building will be completed in September and the outdoor facilities by October 2019. The overall project, which also includes a new extension, has a budget of 3.9 million euros.

Reichenhain primary school

The renovation of the school building continued during the holidays. The work is expected to be completed by October 2019. The costs amount to 3.2 million euros.

Harthau primary school

Part of the extensive renovation work was completed during the summer holidays. House 2 of the school, with its connector and lift, is now open for use. The building houses classrooms and the after-school care centre. The refurbishment of the school is expected to continue until March 2020. The costs amount to 2.2 million euros.

Klaffenbach primary school

During the holidays, Klaffenbach primary school was partially relocated to Einsiedel primary school in order to clear the site for the upcoming renovation of the after-school care centre. The refurbishment will be completed by summer 2020.

School Schönau

The interior work in the school entered the next phase. During the holidays, work began on the loft extension. The construction work should be completed in February 2020. The costs for the project amount to 1.4 million euros.

Rosa Luxemburg Primary School

The school playground will be completed by the end of the holidays. The costs for this amount to 410,000 euros.

J.-A.-Comenius Primary School

The mobile classrooms will be completed by the start of the school year. The budget amounts to 2.2 million euros.

School property Borna

The former premises of the old Borna primary school are currently being renovated and remodelled for the relocation of secondary schools. 650,000 euros have been made available for this purpose. The Georg Weerth Secondary School will be the first to use the site after the holidays, as the building on Uhlandstraße has to be vacated for the upcoming renovation and expansion.
