Over-allocation of funds for construction measures

Today, the city council decided to provide additional funds for road maintenance measures, the barrier-free expansion of bus stops and its own contribution to the development of the castle pond pavilion.

  • Road maintenance: At the time of submission, only around 700,000 euros (currently 300,000 euros) were available for the maintenance of public traffic areas for the remainder of the year. This means that it is not possible to fulfil the road safety obligation. Experience from previous years has shown that at least 300,000 per month of construction work is required to repair damaged areas. The additional 650,000 euros made available will cover this requirement.
  • Expansion of bus stops: The Passenger Transport Act stipulates that bus stops must be barrier-free by 2022. The city of Chemnitz has set up a programme for the conversion of bus stops, including the new ring bus route. This is partially subsidised by the Saxon Investment Strengthening Act. A corresponding tender had to be cancelled last year due to unreasonable prices. A new tender in 2018 resulted in an additional requirement of €340,000 compared to the planning. This additional requirement cannot be covered by further grants from the Investment Strengthening Act and is therefore to be secured with the €300,000 that has now been over-allocated.
  • Castle pond pavilion: The additional funds of €100,000 will be used as a contribution to the already approved cultural area funding of €80,000 for the installation of a media connection for the castle pond pavilion. The measure serves to upgrade the castle pond island for event operations. It includes the connection of the pavilion to drinking water, electricity and telephone as well as the creation of sanitary facilities (WC, kitchen).

The funds are covered by general key allocations, which are around 14.9 million euros higher than planned. After deducting measures that have already been carried out, around 4.2 million euros were still available before this decision.
