Outdoor pool season 2015 starts in May

The 2015 outdoor pool season starts on Saturday, 16 May: Einsiedel and Bernsdorf outdoor pools kick things off - Wittgensdorf follows on 23 May, Gablenz on 30 May - Rabenstein reservoir opens the swimming season on 1 May.

Today, the Education and Sports Department informed the Education and Sports Committee about the opening times of outdoor swimming pools and indoor swimming pools during the summer season, the closing times of the indoor swimming pools and the planned maintenance work.

In 2015, the outdoor pool season will once again be divided into three phases: pre-season, main season and post-season. In the pre-season until 10 July, the municipal outdoor pools are open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., on hot summer days from 10 a.m. onwards. During the main season (school holidays) from 11 July to 23 August, the municipal outdoor pools are open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., or from 9 a.m. if required. And in the off-season from 24 August, they are open from 11 am to 6 pm.

Eissport und Freizeit GmbH Chemnitz, operator of the reservoir in Rabenstein, will open the natural pool to visitors from 1 May at 10 a.m. - depending on the weather, probably until October. Opening hours are from 10 am to 7 pm. Information online: www.stausee-rabenstein.de

The swimming pool department of the Education and Sports Office has planned to open the outdoor pool season on Saturday, 16 May. The Einsiedeln and Bernsdorf outdoor pools will open first, followed by the Wittgensdorf outdoor pool on 23 May and the Gablenz pool on 30 May. Here, the small upper paddling pool will be completely renovated. In order to avoid having to completely close the children's water play area during the swimming season, the Gablenz outdoor pool will open two weeks later than usual until the construction work is completed, but will not close until 6 September. The Wittgensdorf, Einsiedel and Bernsdorf outdoor pools will remain open until 23 August (according to current plans).

Swimming pools use summer for repairs - special opening planned for clubs

With the exception of the "Am Südring" indoor swimming pool, no extensive structural and technical maintenance work is planned for the indoor swimming pools in 2015 that would lead to further restrictions on use outside the summer closure period. The technical measures planned during the closing times of the indoor swimming pools are intended to create the conditions for the smoothest possible operation of the swimming pools during the coming school year. For the "Am Südring" indoor swimming pool, the renewal of the pump technology, repairs to technical systems and renewals in the sanitary area, including the shower pipework, are planned. A period of ten weeks is planned for this, so that the indoor swimming pool will be open to bathers again from 7 September.

To support the city's swimming clubs, which would be restricted in their preparation for competitions due to the closure of the indoor pools, and to take account of the summer weather conditions in Chemnitz in recent years, it is also planned to offer special opening times in the city pool for public use and training in 2015. As things stand at present, the 25-metre hall will be used initially, followed by the 50-metre hall from 4 August.

And the opportunity to go swimming in the indoor pools on public holidays is also offered by the municipal pool on all public holidays, including Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. as part of public swimming and sauna operations. This option has proved its worth in recent years.
