Outbreak of contagious equine anaemia detected in the Adelsberg district
An outbreak of contagious equine anaemia was officially confirmed in Chemnitz today. The pathogen was detected in the blood of two horses, but the animals showed no signs of illness. The affected horse farm is located in the Adelsberg district. In order to prevent the further spread of the disease, the two infected horses have already been killed and the affected herd of horses has been placed under restriction.
In addition, the food monitoring and veterinary office has issued a general order to protect against infectious equine anaemia. Contagious anaemia of solipeds is a notifiable animal disease, also known as infectious anaemia. It can lead to protracted disease progression in horses with fever, weakness, anaemia and even death. Vaccination and cure are not possible. Infected animals must be killed. The disease can be transmitted directly to other horses by blood-sucking insects. Other animal species - except equines (horses, donkeys, mules, zebras) - are not affected. The disease poses no danger to humans either.
